Atlanta Bar-B-Q Festival | Atlanta, Georgia USA

View on the hill

Ribs, Guns, Fox Brothers BBQ

Fox Bros is synonymous with equality.

St.Louis Style Ribs

DBA Tent

Fried Corn on the Cob and Smoked Chicken Wings

Rightfully counting cash, because their pops are money.

Creamy Avocado Popsicle

Cooking thumbs up

Funnel Cake

There were many BBQ vendors at the festival but shown here is what I deemed as the best eats. The ribs, funnel cake, and avocado pop was my favorite. Try the Avocado pop, I know it sounds strange but its like ice cream on a stick. It’s phenomenal!

BBQ Crusade through Lockhart | Lockhart, Texas USA

Outside about to eat BBQ

Giant Beef Short Ribs. Almost ordered two, but realized I had to pace myself. lol

During my behind the scenes tour at Blacks, got to see their custom smoker setup.

Outside Kreuz Market

Cutting some brisket for my pleasure.

Beef Brisket, sliced. Forgot to take a picture before I devoured my first 1/2 lb of brisket (fatty/lean mix). Got this to symbolize the brisket :). The red ring is quite lovely; definitely the fatty brisket was better.

Outside Smitty’s Market

Took the tour at Smitty’s Market and they showed me their smoking pitts. Awesome setup! Be warned, when you walk in, the cashier/where you order is right near the fire pits so… It’s going to be hot. Really hot.

Killer baby back ribs and a smoked pork chop; the pork chop had this incredible smokey seasoned fatty crust.

Holy…Wow.. I definitely been baptized in some amazing Texan BBQ and the delicious BBQ bar is now set so high. Was advised by friend Justin Fox of Fox Bro BBQ in Atlanta, GA to hit up three places in Lockhart, TX. And let me tell you…of everyone I know in Georgia, who better to advise me on good Texan BBQ than this man.

Anyways, Blacks BBQ, Kreuz Market, and Smitty’s Market were the three places he recommended. And so.. in typical Matt Wong form, I decided to hit up all three :). I definitely did my research and found what were the best of each establishment among multiple review sites (e.g. Yelp, Zagat, etc..) and the dishes you see above are what I saw as best. (Let me know if I missed something on Facebook or Twitter as I definitely mean to go back soon).

To put it simply. My BBQ Crusade was incredible. Can’t wait to go back!

Heirloom Market BBQ | Atlanta, GA USA

Expediting

Brunswick Stew

Ribs and Mac & Cheese

Korean sweet potatoes with black sesame seeds

Spicy Korean pulled pork sandwich

When I’m home in Georgia, there are times when I lack a good place for Malaysian cuisine. Fortunately when it comes to BBQ, there is really no such shortage; e.g. Fox Bro BBQ, Community Q, Fat Matt’s (among many others). Great for us eaters as we have so many options. This place is different from your traditional (insert BBQ region here) type BBQ since they combine influences of Texas, Tennessee, and South Korean flavors. It’s so good.

Recommended by my friend Torey Haas, founder of Monsterbuster Entertainment – an independent production company based out of Atlanta; hidden off Chattahoochee Ave, this BBQ experience has been around for 25+years. They pride themselves with their traditional old southern methods of slow cooking using hickory wood. Much like what Torey states, it’s the Jalapeno bread that makes your BBQ experience unique.
